Students and Community Work Together to Keep Lake Martin Beautiful

Published: 10.13.2022

We live in an extraordinarily beautiful place, and it takes dozens of volunteers and participating companies to keep it that way. Significant efforts are ongoing to keep our shoreline and roadsides pristine.

Renew Our Rivers

The very successful annual cleanup, organized by Lake Martin Resource Association (LMRA), was begun in 2006 and to date has resulted in the removal of more than 160 tons of trash from the shoreline of Lake Martin. Additionally, more than 1,000 automobile and truck tires have been removed and recycled courtesy of Tallapoosa County Commissioner, Steve Robinson. Volunteers who have supported and participated in the two-day event include Lake Martin Dock Company, TowBoatUS Lake Martin, City of Alexander City, Russell Lands, Alabama Power Company, Lake Magazine, Green for Life, Wind Creek State Park and numerous youth groups.

This year’s Renew Our Rivers cleanup is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, November 4 and 5. Learn more >

Ms. Shani Smith and Third Grade students from Veritas Lake Martin Christian School catch a photo opportunity with the quilt during a visit with Mayor Woody Baird and John Thompson, President of LMRA.

This beautiful quilt was created by Alexander City native Ms. Sally Mason using customized tee shirts that were available for volunteers who participated in each annual LMRA “Renew our Rivers” shoreline clean up. The shirts feature artwork provided by Third and Fourth Grade students at Nathaniel Stephens Elementary School. The winning art was chosen each year from 20 finalists and used to create customized t-shirts to be distributed to the volunteers. The entire Stephens School faculty and student body also received a shirt as part of the annual event.

Adopting Roadways and Shorelines

Established by Russell Lands and LMRA, 63 Pride Drive is designed to encourage volunteer/public participation in controlling litter year-round on Highway 63. Applying that same “adoption” model, LMRA’s Treasured Mile Program is a partnership program established by LMRA with sponsorship from Russell Lands and Alabama Power Company that allows for recreational, volunteer public participation in controlling litter year-round at Lake Martin through the adoption of a shoreline segment or the adoption of an APCO-owned island.

Individuals, families, educational institutions, houses of worship, organizations, civic groups, youth groups and businesses are all invited to adopt a stretch of Highway 63, section of shoreline or an APCO island to help control litter and maintain these areas to help provide beauty and openness for the benefit of the public and also assist in providing for a cleaner, healthier and more attractive recreational environment at Lake Martin.
