Naturalist Marianne Hudson Makes Auburn Game Days Happen

Published: 09.14.2015

While you may already know that our resident Naturalist Marianne Hudson knows all about the plants and animals that call Russell Lands On Lake Martin home, did you also know she’s a vital part of game day at Auburn University?

It’s true. Marianne’s main gig, as Assistant Director of Education and Raptor Training at Auburn University, keeps her busy for at least an hour a day, every day from June until December. Southern Living recently profiled Marianne and three other amazing ladies in a feature titled, “Women Who Make Game Day Happen.”

Marianne and Auburn’s golden eagle are part of the iconic pre-game “war eagle” flight, a tradition that dates back to 1892. A trained raptor professional, Marianne is fearless, even in the face of the eagle’s raw power. “Eagles talons are meant to kill prey as big as young elk. I wear a glove, but I can still feel the immense pressure of his grip, which changes with his mood.”

Congrats to Marianne on all you do to keep a time-honored tradition alive – and flying. War eagle!
