Building a Heritage

First owners set a beautiful standard

Published: 03.13.2025

Three years ago, we were building the first roads into The Heritage. This effort was extensive as we were creating a new waterfront residential community on Wicker Point peninsula and providing access to Wicker Point Golf Club. Later that year, we released the first collection of waterfront properties that were ideal for custom home building accessed by the newly built roads.

What happened next was, and still is, impressive. All of the 52 properties released in Phase 1 were quickly sold. Owners then engaged approved architects and designers to design custom lake homes. Approved builders then were engaged to bring the beautiful designs to reality. This construction effort can best be described as frenetic. There are contractors everywhere!

A quick census

We have added additional lots since we released Phase 1 in 2022. So far, roughly 120 waterfront properties have been purchased. About 90% of those purchases were to families who wanted to build a heritage lake home for their family on Lake Martin. Moving from a property sale to a finished lake home is a big task, and on a quick drive through the Wicker Point peninsula, you will see hundreds of construction workers.

To date, 13 lake homes have been completed and are in use. There have been approximately 44 building permits issued by The City of Alexander City as of mid-February 2025. An additional 23 lake homes have been reviewed by The Heritage Architecture Review Committee this year.  That is a total of 67 projects either completed, under construction, or slated to start soon. That is a lot of lake homes!

An early taste of Heritage homes

We think all of the lake homes in The Heritage are lovely. We thought that it would be fun to provide you with an early portfolio of completed homes to give a sampling of different designers and builders. (All of these homes are furnished and occupied by the owners.)

431 Luanne’s Way
This home was designed by Jim Mancil from Montgomery. Jim has worked on a variety of lake homes in our neighborhoods such as The Ridge, Willow Glynn and The Willows. This home, built by Legacy New Homes, also out of Montgomery, was a great execution of a beautiful design. The house boasted four bedroom suites in the main house and a bedroom suite above the garage. The property has a great lake view—especially over the custom lakeside pool.

438 Luanne’s Way
This lake home was custom designed by Mitch Ginn to be built by Kenny McBride as a speculative home. This is the first home on the right-hand side of the street in the first phase of residential property in The Heritage. The design was created to take maximum advantage of the lake views while giving lots of space for a multi-generational family.

There are four bedroom suites in the main house and a huge apartment above the garage. The design has two levels, both with family rooms and expansive outdoor living space. Every lake home should have a lake prep room like the one created here. Marketing time was short for this great lake home. The new owner just loves it. We do too!

867 Luanne’s Way
We gets lots of comments about this Richard Greene design. Richard, who is from Marietta, Georgia, listened very carefully to the owner and produced a design that was quickly approved by our Architectural Review Committee. We expect (and hope) that everyone will be inspired by this new home.

TCC General Contractors from Birmingham hit a home run with this project. We especially love the way that they were able to blend stone, natural siding and roof materials together, so this lake home is an instant classic. The owner had the house sited and landscaped to take advantage of beautiful lake views from virtually every room.

71 Luanne’s Point
This design by Mitch Ginn has been an early favorite for potential owners in The Heritage. We asked Mitch to create a sample design for this community to set the standard. He drew on inspiration found from French country homes and put a Lake Martin spin on the outdoor living space. This home was built by Cary Atkinson and boasts four bedroom suites in the main house and a full apartment with extra rec space and bedroom over the garage.

618 Luanne’s Way
This beautifully photogenic lake home was designed by Bart Miller from Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Bart designed this home to take advantage of the views from and the topography of this gorgeous homesite. We love the outdoor living space and the terrace on this rustically contemporary design.

Francis Bryant Construction from Birmingham did a beautiful job with this lovely design, as they do with all of their projects here at the lake.

More are coming

Builders are working hard to create custom lake homes in The Heritage. This selection above is just an early taste of the many, many new designs that are destined to reset the residential standards on Lake Martin.

Most of the homesites have been purchased by families desiring a custom lake home. There will be, however, a few homes started this year by builders that may be purchased by families not wanting to wait on designs. We will announce groundbreaking for these projects as they occur.

For those interested in the full design-and-build process, and who are disappointed that we have virtually sold out of building lots, we will be releasing Phase 4 adjacent to The Benjamin Lake Club in July. Whatever you desire, whether it is homes built for sale or estate homesites, our Sales Executives have all the information you need. We invite you to reach out to them for all information related to The Heritage. Just call 256.215.7011 or send them an email.
